Installing commercial Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers on your business premises offers numerous benefits, from attracting a wave of eco-conscious customers to improving your employees’ job satisfaction, but it can be difficult to quantify the return on investment (ROI) that you’ll receive. Consequently, the prospect of having to budget for installation costs can be daunting, particularly if you are uncertain how long it will take to recoup your investment.
Fortunately, as part of the UK’s drive towards Net Zero, there are several funding streams to help alleviate the installation costs of commercial EV charging stations.
In this article, we will outline three key government-backed grants that can help to offset your costs.
Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS), which is a government grant provided by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), aims to reduce the upfront cost of purchasing and installing electric vehicle charging stations for businesses. Eligible organisations can receive up to 75 per cent of the purchase and installation costs, capped at £350 per socket, for a maximum of 40 sockets.
The WCS is ideal for businesses planning to provide convenient charging facilities for employees and visitors. To qualify, businesses must have sufficient off-street parking and use an OZEV-approved installer.
EV Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets
The EV Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets is specifically designed for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with up to 249 employees. This grant supports businesses in developing the necessary infrastructure to facilitate future workplace EV charger installations.
Unlike the WCS, the EV Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets focuses on establishing foundational infrastructure, such as cabling and electrical work, rather than just the charge points. It provides up to £15,000 per building or covers 75 per cent of total installation costs, whichever is lower, making it an excellent option for businesses who are planning to adopt EV technology in the long-term.
EV ChargePoint Grant for State-Funded Schools
Since February 2024, a new grant scheme has been available to assist state-funded schools, colleges, and nurseries in installing EV charging infrastructure. This initiative supports educational institutions in reducing their carbon footprint while encouraging staff and visitors to switch to electric vehicles.
The grant can help to cover the costs of purchasing and installing charging points, ensuring that schools play a key role in the transition to sustainable transport.
